Digital citizenship refers to the norms of behavior with regard to technology use. The emergence of digital culture since the late twentieth century reshapes the culture of the society, economy, politics and education in the 21st century. Using digital tools and technology has become more important than ever as the world grapples with the pandemic and its aftermath. Digital literacy refers to a combination of information literacy skills, communication skills, content creation skills, security skills, as well as skills for problem solving. Digital literacy has a strategic and mutually strengthening relationship with lifelong learning, which is critical to the success of individuals, organisations, institutions and societies in the digital age. It enables citizens to engage with the opportunities brought by digital technology for solving daily life problems and for support of lifelong learning in today’s knowledge-based society. However, when used incorrectly, one may suffer from cyberbullying, risking privacy, spreading and using improper information. Companies can be affected by negative publicity. To enjoy the benefits of everyday IT use, citizens should understand the human, cultural, and societal issues and practice legal and ethical behavior related to IT use. This module helps learners develop digital literacy to use information and communication technologies to find, evaluate, create, and communicate information. It also allows learners to reflect critically on the impact and challenges of digital literacy issues for digital citizenship at the personal, professional and citizen levels in the twenty-first century.
